WHEN THE NUMBERS DON’T MAKE SENSE

Anyone can beat an odd. However, the likelihood of doing so and not doing so depend upon the attributes and circumstances of that individual. Statistics indicate the likelihood of a high school dropout of becoming a millionaire is less than 1%. Almost 90% of millionaires have college degrees. While many say that college is not for everyone, it is for many. As of August 2023, more than 104 million Americans have college degrees and represent almost 1 in 3 individuals.

The high school dropout anomalies are very few and include an exclusive class of ‘unicorns.’ Richard Branson quit high school at age 16 because of his ongoing battle with dyslexia. He became the founder of Virgin Group, which later become Virgin Records. Jay-Z attended the George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School but never graduated. He became the first billionaire in the hip-hop industry.

It is clear the statistics favor education and the college educated and trained. For me, education is one of the greatest liberators. Intellectual capacity is very powerful and can get you a seat at the table when you may not have the capital or  resources to get invited. One thing I know for sure is that you cannot unknow what you already know.

Regardless of your economic or educational background or status, it is important that each individual master their craft. Whether a janitor or justice of  the peace, be the very best that you can be. Do what others will not do so that you can do what others cannot do. Make sure that you are an ‘A’ player who is top of mind when your profession is mentioned or needed.
