Prosperity is the state of being successful and thriving economically in a condition of well-being. Good fortune and wealth are also attributes of prosperity. Not only is varying degrees of wealth included in prosperity, but also happiness and good health.
From a social point of view, economic components of prosperity tend to compete with or may be seen as contradictory to many viewpoints of prosperity. These competitive attributes may include, but are not limited to, happiness, health, or the spiritual well-being that may also be viewed by many as aspects of prosperity. For instance, longer hours at work may provide economic prosperity at the sacrifice of quality of life and time with family and friends. Indicators of social surveys reveal that higher income does not necessarily increase an individual's level of happiness or satisfaction with life.
While economic growth is seen as a necessity for economic prosperity, this view is constantly being challenged by socialistic viewpoints that belief sustainable development, not growth, is necessary for prosperity. The Degrowth Movement is an internationally organized group that argues overconsumption is the root cause of environmental challenges and social inequities. Instead, Degrowth advocates for the downscaling of consumption and production.
Prosperity is synergistic and combines good fortune with good health and wealth. There is scientific evidence that happiness influences good health and enhances relationships. This positively impacts the immune system, too. Health and wealth provide the best outcome. No one wants to have wealth with compromised health. To the contrary, no one really wants good health with the other health stressors that accompany financial challenges. Why not seek to achieve and have both: health and wealth!
