There are many individuals who give and share unsolicited advice. More times than not, the advice is not just unrequested but not good and/or practical. As for one of my life’s philosophies, “Do not take advice from someone you would not trade places with.” As for another life philosophy, “Opinions cost. You are not obligated to take advice from or listen to anyone who is not writing a check or funding an investment.”
Some may believe these philosophies are harsh. While that may be true, imagine the individual consequences of heeding unsolicited, poor advice. Furthermore, who will bear the financial burden and brunt of listening to the opinion of a person who has no vested interest in the outcome? Life is not easy; it should not have to be further complicated by individuals and people who do not have your best interest at heart or top of mind.
Let’s look at the philosophy of not taking advice from someone you would not trade places with. When financial choices and decisions need to be made, oftentimes the advice of someone who lacks financial independence or financial stability is tapped for information. Many times, the response they give is based on their financial lens and perspective. You are then limited by their finite mindset and perspective.
I developed the philosophy of opinions cost when counsel was sought of me by brides. To eliminate any doubt or second guessing, my ultimate suggestion was that you are only required to listen to someone who wants to finance or fund the suggestion they are making. This proposal is an ultimate guarantee that most will not impose their opinions on you.
Philosophies of life allow decision making to be automatic with little to no thought. There is much in life to concern you; there is no reason to become further bogged by poor advice and opinions of others.
