Contentment can be defined in numerous ways. For the purpose of this money blog, contentment will be defined as a state of happiness and satisfaction without any comparison to or competition with others. No matter a person’s disposition or position in life, the state could always be better or worse. Understanding contentment is the art of being confident and comfortable with an individual’s choices and circumstances. Oftentimes, individuals have the capacity to choose. Other times, the circumstances of life are decided and/or determined for the individual. Adapting and adjusting to circumstances allows a person to move with the ebbs and flows of life. Resistance to such ebbs and flows can create unnecessary disharmony and hardships.
Contentment allows a person to make choices and decisions that are best for them. For example, an individual may need another or new car. However, buying a domestic car may be the most financially feasible as compared to buying a foreign, luxury vehicle. Societal pressure can place a squeeze on an individual and the finances of that individual. Appearing successful and being successful are two very different matters. Contentment does not measure success. Knowing who you are and understanding your own individuality is critical. Developing unhealthy financial habits can often lead to financial demise. Overspending or taking on excessive amounts of debt should never be the reaction to social pressures and perceived societal norms. Solely seeking material possessions and treasures of the world can skew almost anyone’s financial priorities.
Finances are temporary but ignorance may sometimes be permanent. There are always mechanisms, means, and measures to overcome financial obstacles and pitfalls. Discipline is most often the deciding factor in a positive or negative outcome. Focused discipline combined with a definitive plan may allow most anyone to achieve certain measures of financial successes. The definitive plan will be guided by the individual’s capacity, discipline, money management, and resources.
