ACCESS

Access is a privilege that should not be taken for granted. When you think of one of the dividing lines between those who are wealthy and those who are not wealthy, it is access to opportunities, knowledge, information, credit, cash, and capital.  Individuals who lack wealth often make decisions based on economic factors, while wealthy individuals consider the investment and the investment’s rate of return more times than not. 

Think about a medical emergency for an individual who lacks medical insurance or has medical insurance with an emergency room copay of $500.  The decision to visit the emergency room may be overshadowed by the mortgage or rent payment due at the first of the month or that car payment that may be more important to ensure the individual has reliable transportation to work.  These difficult decisions are made by individuals, couples, and families daily.  An individual’s health should not have to be compromised or ignored due to a lack of resources. 

I often ask people how different their life would be if they had the personal cell phone number of bank presidents, managing partners of law firms, office managing partners of accounting firms, or real estate brokers and agents.  Who and what you have access to can literally shape your financial future and significantly change your financial position. The know how is not as important as the “know who.”  Being connected to the right individual with the resources you need to start a business, obtain access to “insider” opportunities, and having a seat at the table can be critical to your financial success. 

How many times have you been on an elevator and arrived at a destination or meeting only to realize you were sharing the elevator with the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) or Keynote Speaker?  Your elevator speech should always be  prepared.  Do not overlook opportunities to connect with individuals.  Maintain a posture of gratitude and great opportunities will be attracted to you.
